A Week At Middle School Camp

Posted on by Youth for Christ

For many students summer camp is a time full of fun activities, meeting new friends and creating memorable experiences. They look forward to playing games, relaxing on a beach or being blobbed into the lake, but what they don’t realize is that a week at YFC camp could change their lives forever.

This was *Caleb’s last year at middle school camp.  He recently graduated from 8th grade and is excited to start high school.  Caleb is one of the most loving kids I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is encouraging, willing to hold a conversation, and always reaching out to care for others who are hurting.

During a winter trip in February, I found out that Caleb struggled with anger issues. This loving young man shared some very difficult circumstances in his family that left deep wounds. Monday's topic at camp was about sin and brokenness. During cabin time the boys were sitting around talking about the way sin has affected this world, and how it has affected them. Caleb raised his hand to share.  A minute later he was shouting at the top of his lungs in pain. Caleb was breaking before my eyes. He was being overcome by an anger he could not control.

As the conversation continued, Caleb heard how Jesus had been hurt so deeply by our failures, but was still willing to forgive and love us. The message of God’s love and forgiveness hit home with Caleb.  Not only did he give his life, but he also gave his anger and rage to God. He asked for healing, comfort, and guidance in learning to love others despite their sin.

Seeing lives changed by Jesus is a miracle I never get tired of.  It is the reason we do what we do.
